Passing the NCLEX with Flying Colors
After years of studying nursing, you’ve always dreamed of passing the NCLEX with flying colors. This exam is the culminating event of your studies and, once passed, the beginning of your much awaited nursing practice.
When Preparing for the NCLEX
It is all about preparation. If you’re prepared, you’ll be confident taking the NCLEX. Make sure you’re ready in every aspect.
• Procedural Preparation. Have you already applied for a nursing license? Have you registered with the testing service? Have you received an Authorization to Take the Test. Have you scheduled your exam date? Have you paid the examination fee
• Mental Preparation. Have you been able to maintain and follow a realistic and organized study schedule? Have you practiced as many diagnostic tests as you can? Have you tried coaching with a study group? Have you utilized all possible tools to help you with your review? Have you kept away from all distractions?
• Emotional Preparation. Have you been avoiding all negative feelings of failure? Have you rewarded yourself for all your hard work, giving yourself enough breaks from all the grueling review? Have you not lost contact with the rest of the world in this process? Do you believe you will pass the NCLEX?
• Physical Preparation. Have you given yourself enough time to sleep, exercise and eat healthy? Have you rested enough to be refreshed, alert and focused on the day of the exam?
If you’ve answered yes to most, if not all, of these questions, then you’re on your way to doing really well on the NCLEX.
When Taking the NCLEX
On exam day, make sure you bring all necessary items: a government issued photo ID, water, food, candies and medication for possible headache, toothache, cough, colds or allergies.
Make sure you know where the testing site is.
Do not be late.
Carefully listen to instructions given by the proctor. Ask questions when in doubt.
Take restroom breaks before the start of the exam.
Do not discuss answers with other test-takers during breaks.
When taking the test, answer each question slowly and accurately. The computer-adaptive test will not let you change your answer once you’ve selected and submitted it. Do not get sidetracked if everybody seems to be clicking away at full speed. There are no extra points if you’re the first one done. Go at your own pace but also be attentive to how much time you have left.
Never guess. Try rewording questions if you’re uncertain. Try answering before checking out options. If you’re still unsure, eliminate options you’re sure are incorrect to come up with a correct answer. Use contextual clues.
After Taking the NCLEX
Breathe in relief. Take a break. Have a much needed vacation. You deserve it. Results are normally released in two to four weeks. For now, relax. You’ve done your best.
If you’ve prepared early and practiced enough, your chances of passing the NCLEX are excellent.
